7 June: Mega Fan Party – Berlin welcomes the whole of the footballing world
The first official event will be the inaugural Fan Party on 7 June, with the theme being “Berlin welcomes the whole of the footballing world”. At 6.30pm, the FIFA World Cup’s opening match will kick off in Berlin. From 9pm, ZDF will broadcast a live show to cater for all football fans. Stamping Feet, Hermes House Band, Boss Hoss, Olodum from Brazil, Nelly Furtado from Portugal, Simple Minds, Sportfreunde Stiller from Berlin, Ronan Keating, Andrea Bocelli, the Berlin German Opera Choir and the Berlin Philharmonic Brass will be just some of the stars featured.
From the sporting world, legends such as PelĂ©, England’s Sir Bobby Charlton and Germany’s Paul Breitner will be among the many FIFA World Cup winners present, along with members of Germany’s FIFA Women’s World Cup-winning team and former East German international Jürgen Sparwasser.
The Football Globe, which is touring around all of the host cities before the FIFA World Cup starts, will come back to Berlin from 8 to 31 July 2006, and an international sand sculpture festival will also be held in the FAN FEST area.
The FAN FEST will get underway every day with brunch at 11am, when the previous day’s games will be analysed. At around 3pm, depending on the match schedule for that day, it will be time to get down to business. There will be up to three live games a day during the opening round, proof that football is very much the main ingredient of the FAN FEST. After the final whistle has blown on the evening’s last match at around 11pm, the party can really start. Whether you want to talk through the game, celebrate victory or drown your sorrows, the place to be will be the Fan Mile, which will be transformed into Berlin’s biggest dance floor. Top DJs will be spinning the wheels of steel, and there will be a laser show every night at midnight to herald in the new match day.
Not that there will be any let up in the festivities on the six non-match days. The FAN FEST also has a varied entertainment programme on offer, with some of the highlights being the classical music concert organised by the German Football Federation’s (DFB) cultural foundation on Sunday 2 July, featuring the German Symphony Orchestra and conductor Ingo Metzmacher. The German government’s Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development is hosting the “One World Day”, while media partner rs2 will also be contributing to the overall programme.
Motor sports fans are also in for a treat. Thanks to broadcasters rtl, who have obtained the rights for FIFA World Cup broadcasts on two “Super Sundays” on 11 and 25 June, there will be a double helping of sport. Schumacher fans will be able to watch the Formula 1 and the football on the big screens at the Brandenburg Gate.
For those who like to play sport as well as watching it, the FAN FEST also has a lot to offer, namely fields for football and beach volleyball, an enormous goal wall target and much more, all along 17 June Street. 800 tonnes of sand will be brought in for this “World of Football and Sand”, with artists making sand sculptures while fans can simply pretend they are on the beach, or of course make some sandcastles themselves.
